Exercise Rehabilitation at The Wellbeing and Rehabilitation Co.

What is Exercise Rehabilitation?

Exercise rehabilitation aims to support people following an injury or illness.

During an injury or illness people can experience:

  • increased pain
  • weakness
  • reduced strength and stability
  • poor balance
  • altered mobility

It is also typical for people to become more sedentary and inactive during this period of time. It is also common for people to experience fatigue, loss of confidence and changes in their mood.

Exercise Rehabilitation aims to address each of these areas.

It is important that we adopt a bio-psycho-social approach to exercise rehabilitation. This means we address the physical limitations (a loss of range of movement, balance, strength, power), the psychological impact (fear of movement, unhelpful beliefs about recovery, lack of self-efficacy, changes in mood – anxious thoughts and low mood) and the social factors (withdrawal from social interactions, off work/unemployment, influence of family and friends.)

Without appropriate exercise rehabilitation support, we know that some people may develop long term conditions. This can include persistent pain and other health conditions such as diabetes, obesity and heart and lung problems.

In the case of managing injury and long-term conditions, evidence shows that ‘Exercise is Medicine’.

Who is Exercise Rehabilitation for?

Exercise Rehabilitation is relevant for anyone who has experienced a musculoskeletal injury or illness. This could be an acute or chronic injury or a long- or short-term illness.

This may include:

  • Musculoskeletal injury, such as lower back pain, or Achilles Tendinopathy
  • Pre- or post-orthopaedic surgery, such as a total knee or hip replacement, fracture or dislocation
  • Long- or short-term illness, such as long Covid, persistent pain or cancer.

Exercise Rehabilitation will benefit people of all ages whether you are a six-year-old who has fallen and broken their arm, a thirty-year-old footballer with an ACL injury, or an elderly person who is at risk of falling. Exercise rehabilitation for illnesses can be suitable for all ages.
The important thing is that it is meaningful, progressive, achieves the rehabilitation goals… and is fun!

What happens once you have achieved your Exercise Rehabilitation goals?

Once your rehabilitation goals have been achieved, your Physiotherapist will work with you to ensure you are equipped with the skills and knowledge to be able to maintain regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle.

Typically, they will signpost you to resources which interest you. This may be to a gym, personal trainer or an exercise class that would be suitable and beneficial for you.
