Q&A with Barbara: September Reset

Now that the summer holidays are over and routines are starting to settle again, September often feels like a natural time to reset. Whether it’s getting back to regular meals, fitting in some movement, or just feeling a bit more in control after a busy few months, this time of year is a chance to refocus on your own wellbeing.

We had a quick chat with Barbara, who runs the strength exercise classes and supports people through a simple, practical approach to movement and nutrition. It’s not about quick fixes — it’s about helping people find routines that actually work in day-to-day life.

Why do you think September is such a popular time for people to focus on their health and fitness again?

It’s a great time because people have had a bit of a break. Summer has been a bit chaotic — holidays, BBQs, later nights, maybe not as much structure — so now that things are settling down, people are actually ready to get back into a bit of a routine. And September feels like a clean slate, almost like a second New Year. The difference is, people are usually less burnt out and more focused.

What kinds of goals are people coming to you with at this time of year?

It varies, but the main ones are: they want to feel better, lose a bit of weight, they might have put on over the summer, have more energy — especially now the darker mornings are creeping in — and just generally feel stronger and more in control. A lot of people are just tired of feeling sluggish and want to build some healthier habits again. This time of year also tends to motivate people to focus on their health and fitness in the lead-up to Christmas and the New Year

For those who may have lost their routine over the summer, what advice would you give to help them get back on track?

Don’t stress. It happens to everyone. Just start small. You don’t need to do everything all at once — you’ll burn out. I always say pick one or two things: maybe join a class, or prep your lunches for the week. Build from there. Motivation follows action — not the other way round.

Can you tell us a bit about the support WRC offers — both in classes and through the programme?

At WRC, we offer a mix of classes — some strength-based like Be Strong, some cardio such as Boxercise, and others that are more functional, like Strength and Power. We also run Pilates and Yoga sessions, which are great for building core strength, flexibility, and improving overall wellbeing.

The aim is to create a space where people feel comfortable, supported, and challenged at the right level.

I also run an Exercise and Nutrition Programme designed to help people build long-term healthy behaviours. It looks at the full picture — from what you’re eating and how you’re moving, to your mindset and daily routines. It’s personalised, supportive, and built to be sustainable in real life.

And finally, what would you say to someone who’s thinking about making a change this September, but hasn’t taken the first step yet?

Take the first step — whether that’s attending a class, booking a session, or simply making one positive change today. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be effective. September is an ideal time to refocus on your health and wellbeing, especially before the busy lead-up to Christmas begin!
