Powered by Progress
Jo’s fitness journey began as part of a wider focus on her overall wellbeing. What started with health coaching gradually led to building a consistent training routine — one that’s helped her stay grounded, motivated, and steadily progressing. In this interview, Jo shares how she’s built sustainable habits, stayed on track through challenges, and found strength in routine..
WRC: What inspired you to try the Strength & Power class, and how did it feel getting back into a regular training routine after some time away?
After a couple of years with limited options to be able to exercise, I needed to phase back into strength training. Strength & Power offered a great combination of strength and cardio fitness and Barbara is amazing at adapting the class for different levels of fitness within the class.
WRC: What motivates you to keep showing up each week?
I train better when I don’t know what the routine is. In previous gyms, I became familiar with the routine and would start to switch off or not push myself as hard in the class. With Strength & Power every week is completely different, but having been a regular for over 3 years I can see how Barbara has always had a progressive training plan for the regular attendees, so we build week on week.
The regulars who attend the class are also brilliant, really welcoming and make the class a lot of fun.
WRC: We all have off days — what helps you stay consistent when life gets hectic or your energy’s low?
For me, I need a routine. I worked out what days I can work out around family and work commitments, and I’ve built my fitness plan around these available slots, and 90% of the time I stick to these slots.
Also, the results, my progress has been slow but that has also meant I have been able to continually maintain the on-going progress. No fad diets or crazy 6 week fitness routines, week on week building blocks.
At times the slow progress has been REALLY frustrating but on reflection, I’ve transition my day to day habits into healthy, sustainable and progressive training habits.
WRC: You’ve mentioned having physio before — has that influenced how you now approach your training, recovery, or overall movement?
100% and this is why the Wellbeing and Rehabilitation Centre really does do what it says on the tin, it provides a holistic approach to wellbeing. My first visit to WRC was for counselling which transition into 6 weeks with a Health Coach, then I had started attending a number of the fitness classes and PT with Barbara. Unfortunately, I broke my wrist in January and as soon as I was able to have physio I came back to WRC for physio and the team gradually built me back up to training. I can honestly say, the holistic approach gave me the best recovery results I could ask for. I’m now lifting heavier than I did before breaking my wrist, as the team worked together through the recovery phase.
WRC: What would you say to someone who’s feeling unsure, unfit, or intimidated about joining a class like Strength & Power?
Sign-up and give it a go! I was at my lowest in terms of mental health and fitness when I first signed up to my first class at WRC. Barbara took time to understand my challenges but also my goals. Week on week she helped me build on my fitness but also my confidence and self-esteem. I can’t recommend WRC enough! Everyone in the team are true professionals! Experts in their fields but also very welcoming, supportive but challenge you to achieve your goals. Although, Barbara’s Friday Finishers are gruelling they set me up for the day ahead.
