From The Inside - Chat with Katie

Meet Katie Weeds – she has been consistent with our exercise classes since day one and has also used our physio services along the way. We caught up with Katie to hear what has kept her coming back and what she has enjoyed most.

WRC: You have been coming to The WRC regularly since the very beginning — what made you decide to join?

Katie: My GP suggested I undertake weight bearing exercise to mitigate against my low bone density, he knew I already ran quite a bit and occasional did yoga.

When I saw a WRC flyer/social media post for a Strength class for over 50s in Autumn 2021 I realised this was my chance to join a suitable group. I attended the very first class and haven’t looked back since. The fact WRC is very local to me was a massive bonus.

WRC: What’s kept you coming back all this time?

Katie: At WRC I’ve found great teachers/trainers leading small friendly classes. Other staff like those on reception are also welcoming and helpful. As WRC is so local, there’s no journey to put me off attending! I’ve made some great new friends at the classes, so undertaking strength exercise is also very much a social activity. Also the terrific improvements in my strength and fitness, have motivated me to keep this up.

WRC: You have been very consistent with the exercise classes. How have they impacted your overall wellbeing, both physically and mentally?

Katie: I’ve loved seeing my muscles developing and strength improving. Even the cellulite on my thighs has disappeared. Mentally I have gained a lot from making new friends at the classes and the social side which quickly evolved. Morning classes are usually followed by a chat and a coffee under Lapwing Lane Arcade. We’ve had some evening events too and even some holidays…

WRC: You have also used our physio services — how did they support you on your journey?

Katie: When physical niggles have developed it’s been great to access physios who are familiar with the classes I attend and can also give me tips on how to work out better in the classes to avoid certain problems reoccurring in the future. With onsite physio services I know I’ll be supported in my aim to keep exercising for many more years.

WRC: We understand that your bone density has improved over the past few years. We’d love to hear more about your experience—could you share what you’ve done to achieve this progress? In early 2021 a DEXA scan showed my bone density was -1.8 (in 2018 it had been -1.1) and I could see I was on a trajectory to develop osteoporosis (-2.5) within a few years. I already had osteopenia.

When I had a further DEXA scan in April 2023 my bone density loss had actually reversed and was -1.4 which was a wonderful surprise. I had hoped my decent towards osteoporosis might have slowed or even stopped, I was totally amazed to find it had reversed! I strongly believe the strength classes I’ve attended at WRC since late 2021 have made a massive contribution to this amazing improvement in my bone density, along with some medication changes. Osteoporosis can be such a debilitating condition I feel very fortunate that WRC started offering strength classes just at the right time for me. Currently I attend Be Strong, Power & Strength and Boxercise (and of course I still run).

WRC: What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting strength training at WRC, but might be unsure or nervous about taking the first step?

Katie: Go for it! It’s fun and friendly way to develop the strength we now know is so important throughout life. Osteoporosis can be avoided for many people, even if you only start exercising to mitigate it later in life. Barbara, who leads most of the strength classes is excellent, very supportive, encouraging and a fantastic friendly professional. She creates a safe atmosphere where everyone can feel comfortable with their initial ability and be motivated to strive for more. Most people initially start with the small weights and you only work up to heavier weights once you are ready.

The other people in the classes are a mix of ages and genders (mostly women at the strength classes), all invested in supporting each other. As the classes are small, you will quickly get to know the other regular participants and have friendly people to chat with. As my niece said to me recently “Auntie Katie, you’re jacked” Thank you, WRC, she could not have said that a few years ago!
