Summer Self-Care Isn't Selfish: How to Look After Yourself During the School Holidays

When the school holidays arrive, life often becomes busier rather than slower.

Between entertaining the children, planning days out, keeping everyone fed, juggling work and trying to make the most of the sunshine, it’s easy for your own wellbeing to slip down the priority list.

We often tell ourselves we’ll relax “when things quieten down”, but somehow that moment never comes.

The good news is that self-care doesn’t have to mean a spa day or an expensive getaway. Sometimes, the smallest changes can make the biggest difference to how you feel.

  1. Let Go of the Pressure to Have the ‘Perfect’ Summer

Social media can make it seem like everyone is enjoying picture-perfect holidays, exciting days out and endless family fun.

In reality, children don’t remember whether every day was packed with activities. They remember the simple moments—playing in the garden, baking together, building a den, watching a film on a rainy afternoon or sharing an ice cream in the park.

It’s okay to have slow days. In fact, they might be exactly what everyone needs.

  1. Find a Little Time That’s Just Yours

You don’t need hours to recharge.

Enjoy your morning coffee in the garden before everyone wakes up, read a few pages of a book, listen to your favourite podcast on a walk or simply sit outside and enjoy the sunshine for ten minutes.

These small moments of calm can help you feel more present and better able to enjoy the rest of your day.

  1. Get Moving—Without Calling It Exercise

Summer is the perfect time to move more naturally.

Walk instead of driving, explore a local park, go swimming, play football with the children, cycle together or stretch in the garden.

Movement doesn’t have to be intense to make you feel better. It can boost your mood, improve your energy and help reduce stress—all while enjoying the longer days.

  1. Switch Off More Often

It’s easy to spend summer trying to capture every moment instead of living it.

Challenge yourself to leave your phone indoors while you’re in the garden, switch off notifications during family time or take a walk without checking your emails.

The world can wait for half an hour. Being fully present is one of the simplest forms of self-care.

  1. Remember That You Deserve a Great Summer Too

Parents and carers spend so much of the holidays making sure everyone else is happy that they often forget about themselves.

This summer, ask yourself one simple question:

“What can I do today that will help me feel happier, calmer or more energised?”

The answer might be taking a walk, meeting a friend for coffee, reading a chapter of your book or simply sitting in the sunshine with a cup of tea.

Looking after yourself isn’t selfish—it helps you enjoy the summer alongside the people you love.

Make This Summer Feel Different

This year, try not to focus on doing more. Instead, focus on enjoying more.

Slow down where you can, embrace the imperfect moments and remember that the best summers aren’t necessarily the busiest ones—they’re the ones where everyone, including you, has the chance to relax, recharge and make memories that last.
