We recently spoke with one of our regular Be Strong class members, Don Berry, about his experience with the classes and the positive impact exercise has had on his overall wellbeing.
We asked Don a few questions about what got him into strength training, what he enjoys about the sessions, and the advice he’d give to others thinking about getting started.
Before joining Be Strong, how did you feel about exercise and what made you decide to give the class a try?
I had never really been interested in exercise classes and never attended a gym. I had bought a rowing machine and exercise bike but didn’t have the self-discipline to use them regularly.
Then two years ago I had knee replacement surgery and subsequently had physiotherapy with Nicola who suggested I should join the strength sessions.
Have you noticed any changes in your mood, confidence, stress levels, or mental wellbeing since attending regularly?
I really enjoy the Be Strong sessions and feel very positive about them. I like to think I never had problems with my self-confidence but probably engaging successfully with the sessions has had a positive effect on my self-esteem. I think doing them with other participants of similar capabilities contributes to this.
What keeps you coming back to the Monday Be Strong class each week?
I’m committed to the classes partly because I know they’re doing me good, they offer the right level of challenge each week and I enjoy the company of the other members of the group. The latter point is reflected in our regular post-exercise coffee sessions and termly lunches at the Albert Club.
What would you say to someone who is struggling with motivation, stress, or anxiety and is thinking about starting exercise?
I’d reassure people who might be nervous about joining Be Strong sessions that the leader and fellow participants are very supportive, not judgemental and create a fun atmosphere in which to build up your physical abilities in a gradual way.
