Karl's Story - A Transformative Experience

This month, we are sharing Karl’s story—one of steady progress, commitment, and a genuine willingness to put in the work. After coming to the Wellbeing and Rehabilitation Company for support following spinal surgery, Karl slowly moved from physiotherapy into strength training and regular exercise classes, building confidence and capability along the way.

His experience is a clear example of how consistent effort, the right guidance, and a supportive environment can make a real difference. Karl talks openly about what helped him, what kept him motivated and how his outlook has changed throughout his time with the Wellbeing and Rehabilitation Company.

  1. Which services have you used at WRC and how have these helped improve your overall health and wellbeing?

Initially I consulted with WRC’s Physiotherapy services to manage my recovery after spinal surgery. After plenty of hardwork but also support from Nic, I was encouraged to try the Be strong and Pilates classes. I continued to do the 1:2:1 physio and mainly Pilates as both classes compliment each other with one pushing me and the other maintaining the work already done but also hitting spots of my body not normally focused on.

2. How did physiotherapy rehabilitation help you to manage your health condition?

Knowing that a physiotherapy session was always on the horizon meant there was always a reason (beyond getting my mobility back) to do the exercises in between. If I didn’t, I knew the effort from the physio session would be harder. Getting to talk about my progress each time helped us focus our sessions on what was needed and in turn it aided in my recovery.

3. What have been  the  benefits  of  going from physio sessions into 1:1 strength training ?

A move towards full body conditioning and fitness. I feel more rounded and stronger in my daily activities.

4. As someone who has remained consistent with physio and strength sessions, how important would you say this is, and how do you maintain motivation?

You have to ask yourself why you are doing this in the first place, is it for someone else or for yourself.
For me, it was a drive to be useful as I get older. Having seen parents and friends’ health and mobility decline (along with mental health) as they became less active, I am on a mission to fend off decrepitude as long as I can.
How do I stay motivated? Create a routine in your life that means you always have time to do the work.
Also this may not sound politically correct to say this, but I look at other people and how they struggle as a reason to do my best and not  become like that.

5. You  have  attended  classes here too, could you tell us a bit about the transition from physio to exercise classes and how you find the classes?

Transition from physio to classes was easy as my trainers (Nic, Barbara and Katie) are good people with a wealth of knowledge and encouragement. Classes are usually casual and friendly which helps repeat visits and not too hard to pick up.

6. How would you describe your overall journey at WRC, from when you first saw Nicola to where you are now? How have you personally progressed throughout your time at WRC?

In a word, transformative. Starting my journey with WRC after spinal surgery for a herniated disc and the beginnings of sciatica for a second time to come out the other side stronger, more flexible and more knowledgeable than I have ever been, has given me back a future that is pain free and one that is optimistic.
