Susie is an experienced Physiotherapists and the Women’s Health specialist at The Wellbeing & Rehabilitation Company in West Didsbury. As a mum of two, she has first-hand experience of the antenatal to postnatal journey and has specialised in supporting women through that journey and beyond. She focuses on the transition women’s body and minds go through throughout life, to offer holistic support that acknowledges both physical and mental health needs. Susie puts your health and emotional wellbeing at the heart of everything she does and is passionate about empowering women to put themselves at the top of their pile, not neglecting their own needs in the demands of life.
Susie is a Women’s Health Physiotherapist with a strong background in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy. She has worked as a Physiotherapist in the NHS and private hospitals for over 15 years, offering musculoskeletal support for conditions including back, knee, hip and shoulder pain. Susie will utilise these skills when assessing and treating, taking the time to understand your goals and promote individualised care, so that you are offered a bespoke service tailored to you.
In 2016, Susie specialised as a mummy MOT practitioner, a service which offers a one-hour postnatal screening and assessment. This includes everything from screening of the pelvic floor and posture, through to assessing for a tummy gap. Lots of women want to know if it’s safe for them to start exercising and looking after their bodies once more. Women are often worried about their abdominal muscles and may be concerned they have a pelvic organ prolapse or are leaking urine post birth. The pelvic floor examination helps to find out what may be contributing to this and then work out a treatment plan.
The mummy MOT helps you figure out the best next steps for your health journey and work towards goals on your own terms. You will receive a summary of the assessment findings and an exercise programme and action plan based on your goals. Susie can also signpost or refer on to other services that would support you, either within The Wellbeing & Rehabilitation Company or externally.
You can book in for the service when you are six weeks postnatal and beyond by getting in touch at The Wellbeing & Rehabilitation Company. The service is offered in their building at 99 Palatine Road, which is a beautiful old bank that has been freshly renovated to create the perfect space to look after your wellbeing.
Susie is an APPI trained Pilates teacher with additional training in Pregnancy and Postnatal Pilates. Pilates is an excellent form of exercise to help maintain flexibility and improve core strength and postural muscles particularly during your pregnancy and postnatal journey.
Susie teaches Pregnancy Pilates during an early evening and these classes have been very popular. It’s a great chance not only to exercise but to also meet other expecting mums. The Wellbeing & Rehabilitation Company is a place to exercise and rehabilitate but to also connect and feel part of or a community.
Following a Mummy MOT or Postnatal Assessment, one of the classes to take advantage of is the Postnatal Pilates classes that take place during the day. This is a no-impact class that focuses on toning and strengthening your body. You can bring your baby with you and have them lying next to you to ensure the class is totally accessible and fun for everyone to take part in. After your little one has grown up, there are still lots of classes available to you – including Susie’s later evening Pilates class.
Susie also offers services to women facing symptoms associated with the menopause, supporting women experiencing bodies changes during the perimenopause and post-menopause stages. The average age of menopause is 51, but symptoms may be experienced up to ten years before, including anxiety and changes to your body shape, which may lead to a loss of confidence around exercise. Pelvic floor dysfunction, for example incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse, affects many women.
1 in 2 women will experience urine leakage at some point during their lives and Women’s Health Physiotherapy can help. Following a pelvic floor examination, Susie can devise a treatment plan including specific exercises which help to strengthen the pelvic floor. However sometimes women may need to work on relaxation rather than strengthening. Susie is also a mindfulness practitioner, so uses this in her work which can help with relaxation and other symptoms of the menopause like hot flushes.
Susie is also a qualified Women’s Health coach and works with women 1:1 or in small groups to coach them to achieve their health and fitness goals. This is a truly holistic service taking into account their emotional, physical and nutritional needs.
Susie understands the different phases of pregnancy and postnatal recovery and what the body needs at different times, as well as the physical and emotional changes women experience throughout their lives, particularly during menopause.
During pregnancy and postnatally, Susie can progress your rehabilitation and exercises in a safe yet challenging way. As a mum herself Susie knows how difficult it can be to find the time the energy to exercise when you are a mum. She also understands the various challenges women experience throughout life to engage in and maintain regular exercise. Coaching is a service that really takes account of you as a person and all the factors that may be holding you back from fulfilling your goals and Susie can work with you offering support on mindset, nutrition and exercise.
At The Wellbeing and Rehabilitation Company we put a strong emphasis on the sense of community we aim to create a social environment where you feel supported and connected with other likeminded people.
Susie teaches the ‘Wellness Pilates’ class which focuses on targeted exercises, such as practising balance and strength, which is particularly important for joints and bone strength. Susie also includes relaxation which is important for restorative emotional wellbeing.
Susie also offers a general Pilates class which is open to everyone. This class focuses on developing core strength, balance and flexibility. This is particularly useful for anyone recovering from injury or illness or wants to improve their general wellbeing. Susie considers all health conditions and abilities and will tailor exercises to you individual abilities.
